Gary Gerloff's music comes from a world filled with tent show pit
bands, low-rent dancehall trios, and teary-eyed streetcorner serenaders.
The many different styles and moods are all brought together by a 60's
sense of musical cross-pollination. When combined they add to the theory
that some music should exist on it's own, without ponderous or tedious
thought.
One of Gary's first moments of musical transcendence occurred when he
discovered the big, happy, rhythm & blues bands and the power they held over
packed and joyous dance floors. At the same time he discovered the musical
rumblings of the San Francisco scene, led by artists like Dylan and Garcia. Gary
was able to draw from these two schools and expand on them, adding elements as
diverse as country blues and reggae. In his own words, he was "enjoying
being at the vortex of one of the greatest times in musical evolution."
Ancestor Worship is the result of this musical experimentation, and
consists of equal parts reverence and ethnomusicology. Gary has played with some
great musicians, and to him, "they all seem like pretty much the same
person. They do what they do because they love it."
Ancestor Worship features performances from musicians such as Charles
Arthur (Slaid Cleaves), Susan Greenbaum, Steve Bassett, Coby Batty (The Fugs),
and Page Wilson. The Gary Gerloff Band also performs up and down the east coast
and has shared stages with NRBQ, The Jerry Garcia Band, Albert Collins, Robben
Ford, and Johnny Hott.
